How to get rid of nasty spiders that intend to kill you!

I am generally an insect and bug whisperer … but when it comes to the Sydney, or in my case, Northern NSW Funnel Web or Red Back spider, I am a fully qualified killer.

I was 9 years old when I was bitten by a Red Back Spider. I was picking flowers for my Mother on the way home from school when the almost-deadly-and-dramatic-attack occurred. I walked the rest of the way home, given that there were no mobile phones throughout my schooling years, to find my Mother talking on the phone. I tried several times to alert her to the stingy bite I had on my lower leg, only to be hushed until I passed out.

Immediately, my Mother was called to action and I was soon rushed to Mona Vale Hospital where several exciting-and-life-saving-procedures occurred. I felt utterly famous and appeared in the local newspaper. I was most disappointed to go to school the following week only to be told that my classmates knew everything from the newspaper article and so, I had nothing left to say.

Moving on several years, I now have my killer instinct when it comes to evil-eyed spiders.

OUR RUMBLE-DOWN COTTAGE THAT WE HAVE BEEN ‘DOING-UP’ FOR YEARS IS MADE UP OF BEAUTIFUL OLD WOOD AND WE HAVE ALSO CREATED SEVERAL ROCK GARDENS.
IT IS A FUNNEL-WEB SPIDER’S IDEA OF A LUXURY HOLIDAY.

So, every year, my trusty no-brand surface spray comes out and I spray every inch of our home.

Recently, we have noticed about a dozen ‘web like’ cobwebs around our veranda. I had previously thought that funnel-web spiders resided under/in/around rocks and at ground level. But this SEEMS like the funnel web-web.

HERE IS THE EXCITING DIY PART:
  1. NOTICE THE FUNNEL TYPE WEB.
  2. SPRAY THE HELL OUT OF IT.
  3. LEAVE THE WEB FOR A FEW DAYS.
  4. FIND THE DEAD FUNNEL-WEB CAUGHT IN HIS OWN WEB.
  5. THAT’S IT. DIY DONE TO PERFECTION.

A word of warning: Use a space suit if required to remove the web, together with a very long-handled web brush, and make sure the spider is actually dead – if  it starts running (despite urban myth, they don’t jump) – have a brick handy to crush the black as black spider DEAD.

This method has worked before and it is also a great fly, moth, annoying-insect catcher.
